How to Play Piano - Beginner Lessons to Piano Chords

Chords are easy to play. As a beginner we are going to start with learning how to play chords that consist of three notes. Chords can be made up of three or more notes. Three note chords are the simplest so it is best to start there. I recommend all beginners to grab online lessons on how to play piano scales first. Master your scales and then go and learn how to play piano chords.

The reason for learning how to play piano scales first is that scales are the basis of chords.

To begin learning chords we should have our posture correct and sit up straight. Our fingers should be relaxed on the keyboard and we should pretend as if we have an orange palmed in our hand. The way we sit at the piano should be very similar to how we sit in front of the computer. We are going to practise playing piano for long periods of time. If our posture is wrong, we can do significant damage to our back.

Piano chords are played with our first, third and fifth fingers. The first finger on our left hand is our thumb and the third is our middle finger. The fifth finger on our left hand is our thumb. The fingers are reversed on our right hand. To play a chord we just play notes 1-3-5 in the corresponding scale.

If this is a bit hard to understand, a simple example like the one I am going to show you should help.

- Example of a chord

C major chord - CEG

Play notes C, E and G with the correct fingers all at the same time. We will see that CEG are notes 1-3-5 in the C major scale. C major scale is CDEFGABC.

Another quick example to clear things up is the A minor chord. A minor chord is played by hitting notes ACE all at the same time with the correct fingers. As we can see by the two examples, playing chords is quite simple. Learning our scales properly is the hard bit.

As a beginner we should practise for at least an hour a day on scales and chords. As we get better, we can cut back on our scale and chord practising. Practise makes perfect, and when it comes to playing an instrument such as a piano, the amount of practise shows in performances.

In conclusion, playing chords is quite fun and they sound nice too. Remember to practise piano chords first and know the rules of playing chords. As we improve, muscle memory should take over when we play the piano.
